What Blocks Manly's Drains
The suburb reads as a beachside resort town first, "seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care," and the housing stock follows that identity.
Victorian terraces and Federation homes share the peninsula with 1920s-30s Art Deco red-brick flats and 1960s-70s walk-up units.
About three-quarters of dwellings here are apartments, more than almost anywhere else we cover.
That building mix sits on ground that does the drains no favours. Runoff comes hard off the steep sandstone slopes around North Head and Darley Road, and by the time it reaches the flat near The Corso and North Steyne, the older stormwater lines are already working overtime.

Around Ivanhoe Park and the wharf precinct
Ivanhoe Park's bowling greens and the adjoining sports oval sit on ground that's been managed as parkland for well over a century, and the stormwater lines threading past them are just as old.
The ferry terminal, twenty minutes from Circular Quay, sits at the low end of that same catchment, so anything the park sheds in a downpour eventually passes close by the wharf.
